What is Gender?
socially constructed roles, behaviours, expressions and identities of girls, women, boys, men, and gender diverse people. It influences how people perceive themselves and each other, how they act and interact, and the distribution of power and resources in society.
What is Sex?
set of biological attributes in humans and animals. It is primarily associated with physical and physiological features including chromosomes, gene expression, hormone levels and function, and reproductive/sexual anatomy. Sex is usually categorized as female or male but there is variation in the biological attributes that comprise sex and how those attributes are expressed.
Sensitivity to the topic of gender, sex and sexuality is important for several reasons:
- Firstly, as people working with youth in the community, one has to be aware of these issues as it directly and indirectly impacts health (mainly physical, emotional, reproductive and sexual ) and its outcomes
- Secondly, while working with youth across different gender groups such as men, women and transgender, one has to be sensitive to how life choices and decisions differ for different genders
- Thirdly, given the nature of their work as a Yuva Parivarthakas they are likely to encounter people who are exposed to different issues related to gender, sex and sexuality
- Finally, our own gender biases can have a strong influence on the work we carry out in the community.
Therefore, one need to be aware of these biases / prejudices / stereotypes so that they can minimize its interference with work and become more sensitive to the needs of different genders.
